AT HOME
SPA DAY
The limestone and birch master bath is one room
in the house where the Swatts chose not to include any color.
“It is designed to be totally and utterly serene,” says Robert.
I always strive to
dissolve boundaries
between inside
and out.”

HOUSE
CONFESSIONS
Robert and Cristina
share lessons they
learned while building
their home.
■ Cost-cutting
To
keep costs in check,
the couple acted as
their own general
contractors. By
managing the project
themselves, they were
able to save enough
money for some of
the upgraded finishes
they wanted, such as
custom mahogany
doors and windows
and terrazzo floors.
■ Power of two
When the house was
first completed, all
the walls were white.
While Robert’s design
was stunning, Cristina
felt the shell was a bit
too cold for a young
family. They worked
together to make the
interiors colorful and
family-friendly.
■ Second thoughts
“If we were to start
over, we would
probably add one
space near the
kitchen that would
be less public,
with lots of storage
and comfortable,
indestructible
furniture for our
kids,” says Robert. tnD
